PFEARFU Secretariat for Gender Equality and the General Secretariat for Demography and Family Policy and Gender Equality participate in a video-conference

On Friday, April 9, 2021, an online meeting was held between PFEARFU’s Secretariat for Gender Equality and the General Secretariat for Demography and Family Policy and Gender Equality.

Mrs. Hormova, the General Secretary, was informed about PFEARFU Secretariat’s institutional role, its initiatives and the current framework of the Greek Ministry of Defense on issues regarding Gender Equality and gender violence. During the discussion, it was mentioned that the last report submitted from the Equality Office of the Ministry of Defense to NATO entailed zero complaints on incidents of sexual harassment. Moreover, a proposal was laid out urging member states of the Committee of NATO on Gender Perspective (NCGP) to create a mechanism regarding complaints for incidents of sexual harassment.

In more detail, the Secretariat’s proposals were:

  • The establishment of a complaint mechanism and the collection of data on incidents of sexual harassment and gender violence in the Armed Forces, with anonymity guaranteed and the complainants being protected. These elements could very well be included in Greece’s National network of actions in light of the Greek #metoo movement.
  • Conducting research in the Armed Forces’ work-space, using specialized indexes, on issues of gender equality.
  • The necessity of harmonising the family and professional life of active soldiers. The special purpose permits non being granted to specific categories of military personnel,  as well as the parental leave permits, were also discussed.

Finally, Mrs Hormova reassured the General Secretariat’s support towards PFEARFU’s Secretariat of Gender Equality and proposed the latter’s participation at an event organized by the General Secretariat on the 25th of November, a day dedicated to the fight against violence towards women, with the theme of “Women and Armed Forces”. The potential of further cooperation was positively acknowledged, with the common goal being that of informing the military personnel and raising awareness on gender issues.
