Priorities of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council
On 1st January, Poland takes over the Presidency of the EU Council. The six-month Polish Presidency follows Hungary, and will be followed by Denmark from 1 July till 31 December 2025.
The Polish presidency will focus on 7 main priorities:
- Defence and Security
- Protection of people and borders
- Resistance to foreign interference and disinformation
- Ensuring security and freedom of business
- Energy transition
- Competitive and resilient agriculture
- Health security
Concerning security and defence, the Presidency will focus on the urgent need for Europe to strengthen its defence capabilities in response to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. To address such challenges, Europe should take ambitious defence actions and work in complementarity with NATO. Hence, key priorities include increasing military spending, enhancing defence readiness, and fostering a robust defence industry. In this regard, the Polish Presidency aims at concluding negotiations on the concluding negotiations on the European Defence Industrial Programme (EDIP).
Besides, Poland will also advocate for a thorough debate on EU defence financing and will support critical defence and dual-use infrastructure. Among the priorities of the Presidency is also levering other EU instruments for defence to strengthen military mobility, achieving full operational readiness of the EU Rapid Deployment Capacity (EU RDC), and fulfilling other objectives outlined in the EU Strategic Compass, as well as completing the Strategic Review of the EU’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO).
Overall, and under the motto “Security, Europe!”, the Polish Presidency will work in ensuring that the security dimension remains a cornerstone of all European matters.
