MALTA: GWU signs Sectoral Agreement with AFM

In a decisive move to enhance the welfare of Malta’s military personnel, a ground-breaking sectoral agreement has been signed for 1,800 members of the Armed Forces of Malta. Described by Prime Minister Robert Abela as the most beneficial deal ever for the military, the agreement entails an impressive €70 million investment into improving conditions for those who serve the nation.

The accord, negotiated with the Armed Forces of Malta – General Workers’ Union Committee (AFM – GWU), promises significantly higher salaries and improved employment terms. It reflects the government’s continued effort to invest in sectors vital to national stability, following a similar agreement last year that also raised military wages.

The Prime Minister also stressed that it is the state’s duty to prioritize those who stand ready to protect the country, especially in times of crisis. Minister for Internal Affairs, Employment and Security, Byron Camilleri, affirmed that national security and fair employee treatment are not just political promises, but active government commitments.

Overall, this landmark agreement underlines the essential role of military personnel, recognising their sacrifices and dedication, and the crucial advocacy work by AFM – GWU in securing better futures for those who serve.

EUROMIL welcomes such an important agreement for military personnel and the recognition of the people who serve and protect! We also applaud the essential work that has been carried out by our Member AFM – GWU.
