ITAMIL Union stands firm against unjust contract

The ITAMIL Army Union (Italy) has taken a strong stance against an unfair contract that fails to meet the needs of state servants. ITAMIL launched an online survey on 20 July 2024, at 9:30 PM to gauge member sentiment about the current resources and support for military personnel. The survey, which includes 4.500 union members from across Italy, will conclude on 22 July 2024. Impressively, 57% of members voted on the first night.

Government criticized for failing expectations

ITAMIL has criticized the Meloni government for not meeting military personnel’s expectations. Prime Minister Meloni has not met with military unions, and the Ministry of Defense has issued restrictive regulations. The current contract offers only an 85-90 euro monthly increase starting in 2024, far below the 17% inflation from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, no resources have been allocated for 2022-2023.

There are no resources to standardize overtime pay and FESI with the police forces. No new regulations have been proposed to address longstanding needs. The government has shown no interest in a shorter workweek or military pensions. The legal protection bill is limited to the police and public rescue forces.

From its headquarters in Palermo, ITAMIL has launched a campaign of total disapproval against the government. Members are urged to vote YES to abandon public work or NO to continue efforts. If they exit technical work with the public administration, they will not sign the contract renewal, marking the start of a potentially heated autumn with collective appeals to the TAR, funded by the union. These appeals will address inadequate cost-of-living increases, impacts on families and pensions, disparities in treatment, exhausting rotations, poor personnel mobility, and family reunification.

ITAMIL plans to organize assemblies in over 200 Italian municipalities and pursue legal actions in all national and European courts. The survey results and the union’s official position will be announced on 25 July at 10:30 AM.

Negotiation Conditions

  1. Responses to the economic and regulatory platform transmitted by ITAMIL to the public function at the start of negotiations.
  2. A meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and armed forces’ union representatives.
  3. Government commitment to pension issues and specific military needs.
