While the right to freedom of association and related rights are recognized for military personnel in international legislation, these rights are still restricted in a number of countries, which negatively affects the protection of military personnel, their moral and loyalty and progress towards democratic armed forces.
The meeting in Riga will aim at fostering dialogue between representatives of national political and military authorities and representatives of military associations and unions. In countries where military unions and associations do not exist, interested civilian unions will be invited. The meeting will facilitate the exchange of information on standards, experiences and best practices regarding the exercise of the right to freedom of association for military personnel in the region. Moreover, the meeting will particularly focus on social dialogue and guidance will be provided on how to create the conditions for effective dialogue at national level.
This event is by invitation only.
