A Balanced View on Peace and Security
The recent joined multi-movement declaration by ITUC and others and call to action, speaks of peace, freedom, equality, and social justice which are goals we all share. Furthermore, EUROMIL fully supports values such as human rights, decent work, and democratic societies. It is difficult to imagine anyone who would not support a better world for all.
Many of the demands made in this call — climate and security, gender equality, labour rights, trade union rights, and decent work for all — are also issues EUROMIL is actively working on. To give an example, EUROMIL has been regularly publishing its position papers on various such topics, as the use of depleted uranium. We also strongly believe that when military personnel are treated with respect, dignity, and fairness, they become the best defenders of these rights and values.
But we must also be realistic. The world is not perfect, and sadly, conflict will always exist. These conflicts are rarely started by the military. Most are the result of political decisions — by governments, parliaments, authoritarian regimes or dictators — not by those in uniform.
In a democratic society with respect for each other, the military is a tool of peace, not of destruction. It is often called upon to restore stability and help rebuild democracy after conflict or crisis.
That is why simply calling for “less” military spending is not the correct response. Not investing in the armed forces means failing in our responsibility to protect democracy and citizens. Of course, defence spending must be responsible and balanced between the real needs of the military and the needs of society. But we must also ask ourselves a very important question, are we talking about military spending, or about financing the defence industry? Two very distinct topics that often overlap in people’s minds.
In today’s world, marked by multiple crises, from natural disasters, to pandemics or civil emergencies, society often demands and expects from the military to act. However, the heavy reliance on military personnel for all kinds of crisis, coupled with calls for reduced defence budgets, presents a paradox. If we ask soldiers to do more, we must also ensure they are properly supported.
Let us never give up on the dream of peace. But to protect peace and rights for all, we must be realistic, responsible and ready.
The real challenge is to find the right balance: one that strengthens peace without weakening defence and deterrence, that protects society without ignoring security and that builds a fairer world without destroying the structures that help defend it.
EUROMIL remains a committed partner in this shared effort, but always within a framework that respects democratic values, supports those who serve, while also recognising the realities of the world we live in.
