Addressing the recruitment and retention crisis in Greece’s Military Educational Institutions

PFEARFU (Panhellenic Federation of Armed Forces Union) highlights once again the serious issue of recruitment and retention in Greece’s Military Educational Institutions. According to recently released data, there are 460 vacant positions in 2024 for these institutions. This alarming trend of declining entry and retention rates can be attributed to various factors, including low salaries, elevated housing costs, frequent relocations, ineffective legislative measures, and negative workplace environments.

The current challenges facing the recruitment and retention of personnel in Greece’s Military Educational Institutions are multifaceted. Military personnel have experienced significant salary cuts since 2012, leading to decreased motivation and financial strain. The rising costs of housing, especially in urban areas, make it difficult for military families to afford suitable accommodations. Regular transfers disrupt the lives of military families, causing additional financial and emotional stress. Existing laws and regulations regarding promotions, transfers, and benefits are outdated and inadequate, while the current workplace conditions in many military institutions are not conducive to job satisfaction and retention.

To address these pressing issues, PFEARFU proposes a series of comprehensive solutions. Restoring salaries to pre-2012 levels is crucial to improving financial stability and job satisfaction among military personnel. Implementing measures to assist with housing costs and cover expenses related to frequent relocations will alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by military families. Ensuring fair compensation for overtime and hazardous work is essential to acknowledge the sacrifices made by military personnel. Updating and improving the legislative framework for promotions and transfers will make career progression more transparent and equitable. Reconsidering the minimum entry requirements and allowing admissions from various scientific fields can broaden the pool of eligible candidates.

PFEARFU urges political and military leaders to take immediate action to support the welfare of military personnel and their families. By implementing these proposed solutions, the operational readiness of the Armed Forces can be maintained, ensuring that Greece’s Military Educational Institutions are staffed with motivated and dedicated individuals.

By addressing these critical issues, we can work towards a more effective and supportive environment for Greece’s military personnel, ensuring the long-term stability and operational readiness of our Armed Forces.
